How to make a holiday budget: a 5-step plan
Holiday overspending usually is not one big purchase. It is the gifts plus everything around them: the dinner, the train tickets, the wrapping paper, the extra round of cards. This plan puts all of it on one page before you shop.
The 5 steps
- Set the limit first. The most you can spend without carrying a balance into January. Everything else has to fit inside this number.
- List gift groups, not just names. Family, kids, friends, work and teachers, partner. People × amount per person for each group makes the gift total obvious.
- Add the costs people forget. Food and hosting, holiday travel, decorations, cards and postage, wrapping, events and outings, donations, an outfit for a party.
- Compare with the limit. If the plan is over, trim the largest lines first: a lower amount for one big group, or a gift swap instead of individual gifts, moves the total more than cutting one present.
- Turn it into a weekly number. Plan total minus what you have already set aside, divided by the weeks left.
Worked example
Gifts: family 6 × 60 = 360, kids 4 × 40 = 160, friends 5 × 25 = 125, work and teachers 3 × 15 = 45, partner 120 → 810
Everything else: food and hosting 250, travel 150, decorations 60, events 50, donations 40, cards and postage 30, wrapping 20 → 600
Plan total 1,410, limit 1,500 → 90 under
Already set aside 300, 54 days (7.7 weeks) left → (1,410 − 300) ÷ 7.7 = about 144 a week
Everything else: food and hosting 250, travel 150, decorations 60, events 50, donations 40, cards and postage 30, wrapping 20 → 600
Plan total 1,410, limit 1,500 → 90 under
Already set aside 300, 54 days (7.7 weeks) left → (1,410 − 300) ÷ 7.7 = about 144 a week
In this example gifts are 57% of the season. That is common, and it is why the "everything else" list matters: 600 of spending would have been invisible on a gifts-only list.
