About the 50/30/20 rule

What counts as a need?

Things you would still have to pay if you cut everything else: housing, utilities, groceries, getting to work, insurance and minimum debt payments.

Why are BNPL payments a need here?

Once a plan is running, skipping a payment means fees or damage to your credit, so it behaves like a bill. The purchase was usually a want; several plans at once is a common reason needs go over 50%.

What if my needs are over 50%?

Very common with high rent. Treat the rule as a direction: keep savings above zero, avoid opening new installment plans until current ones finish, and move toward the targets over time.
